Dear Blog
Another busy week at work and I wouldn’t swap it for the world but my battle to get veteran alert cards and hospital information sheets seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
I do not want publicity for myself, I want to make sure that veterans and their families are understood. Why can’t veterans have a warning cards in their wallets or purses, or sheets that give the emergency services the head’s up.
Why can’t families have the opportunity to speak to service providers and explain what it is really like living with PTSD, not just from the sufferer’s point of view but also from their families. I know from experience that when Mum and I have told the hospital or ambulance staff that you need to know this or understand such and such will trigger a reaction we are often looked at as though we are stupid. We have even been asked what medical qualifications we have. Mum and I will both admit that we are not medically trained but we have something far more important. We have knowledge of the sufferer, we know what makes them tick, what upsets them, how to calm them down etc and those points should be taken into account.
Our local ambulance crews and hospitals all say that the medical alert sheets and veteran/carer cards are helpful and would like to see them used more often. Not necessarily for PTSD sufferers but for anyone with complex issues. So why can I not get someone to listen and back me.
I have written so many letters but feel as though I have wasted my postage. I have never asked for financial support just the name of a charity or a celeb to back my idea, but nothing. The two Princes were helpful and have passed on my suggestions to other organisations but again nothing. The NHS telephoned me and promised to email my details to someone who would get back to me, nothing
So Niamh, if you want to get something done you need to pull up your socks and do it yourself. Not sure how I am going to achieve it but I need to try.
On a different note I have been nominated for the Pride of Britain Awards. Thank you to the person/people who nominated me, I know there are loads of truly amazing people who deserve recognition for their amazing charity work, community projects etc. I believe that Claire Blackman has been nominated for the same category so I don’t stand a chance, but the fact that someone sent an email or whatever I cannot thank you enough. Ironic isn’t it but maybe if I had lots of nominations a paper or some celeb would back my cause. It would be my luck that I got someone I have never heard of though. LOL
Well blog time for bed it has been a long day.
Sweet dreams and huggles
